Panchtatva: how to balance the five elements in daily life
29-Aug-2026
In Indian philosophy, everything in the universe is made of five elements, the panchtatva or panchamahabhuta: earth, water, fire, air and ether. Our bodies are made of them, our homes are made of them, and Ayurveda, yoga and Vastu all work with them.
What I love about the panchtatva is how practical it is. Balancing the elements is not about elaborate rituals. It is about how we eat, how we use water and electricity, how we breathe and how we speak. When the elements are in balance, I believe it supports balance in the rest of life too: health, wealth, success, love and relationships.
Earth: Prithvi tatva
Earth is the element of stability, the body, food and the ground beneath us. It is linked to the root chakra and to feeling secure.
To balance earth:
- Do not overeat, and do not waste food.
- Do not harm the soil.
- Respect the sources of the food chain: the soil, the farmer and the grain itself.
A simple daily practice: before you eat, pause for a moment of thanks to everyone whose work brought the food to your plate.
Water: Jal tatva
Water is the element of flow and emotion. In my practice I link it with the flow of cash and with the family environment and happiness at home.
To balance water:
- Do not waste water.
- Avoid water clogging and leaks at home: fix dripping taps and blocked drains.
Water also responds beautifully to intention. If you would like to try that, my post on the water manifestation technique shows how.
Fire: Agni tatva
Fire is the element of energy, transformation, digestion and drive. A balanced fire element supports name, fame, action and passion in your life.
To balance fire:
- Stop wasting fire resources: gas, electricity and so on.
- Switch off lights and appliances you are not using.
Air: Vayu tatva
Air is the element of movement and breath, prana itself. It is linked to the heart and to how freely life moves.
To balance air:
- Do not pollute the air.
- Practise breathwork or pranayama every day.
- Grow more trees and plants, and help create a healthy environment.
Even five minutes of slow, steady breathing in the morning is a good place to begin.
Ether: Akash tatva
Ether, or space, is the subtlest element. It is the element of sound and of the space in which everything else exists. Balancing it brings clarity of life, supports the power of manifestation, helps cancel negativity and cleans the aura.
To balance ether:
- Do not gossip.
- Do not use foul language.
- Talk positively, about yourself and about others.
Because ether is the element of sound, our words matter. What we say, and what we repeat, fills the space around us.
The four pillars of life with the five elements
For the 11:11 portal in November 2025, I shared a way to structure the four pillars of life, health, love, career and abundance, using the five elements, with an affirmation and an angel number for each. Say each affirmation slowly, and finish with its number.
Health (777): "I am blessed with vibrant health and radiant energy. Every cell in my body glows with divine light. My mind, body and soul are in perfect harmony. I am healed, strong and whole. 777"
Love (222): "I attract deep, soulful and nurturing love. I am cherished, valued and emotionally fulfilled in all my relationships. Love flows to me and through me effortlessly. 222"
Career (888): "I am aligned with my divine purpose and success flows to me with ease. My work is recognised, rewarded and deeply fulfilling. Opportunities multiply in magical ways. 888"
Abundance (111): "I am a powerful magnet for limitless abundance. Wealth, joy and prosperity flow into my life continuously. Everything I desire manifests with grace and speed. 111"
You can pair these with the bay leaf ritual or water manifestation, both of which work with the elements directly.
A simple way to begin
- Choose one element that you feel is out of balance in your life.
- Practise its habit every day for twenty-one days.
- Add the matching pillar affirmation each morning.
- Notice what changes, in your home and in yourself.
What this is not
Balancing the elements is a spiritual and lifestyle practice. It supports a calmer, more mindful way of living, but it does not replace medical care or professional financial advice. If you have a health concern, please see a doctor.
