Crystals for healing: how to choose one and what each one does
28-Jul-2026
Crystals are often the first healing tool people are drawn to, sometimes before they can explain why. In my practice I use them alongside Reiki, tarot and simple daily rituals. Here is how I think about crystals, how to choose one, and what the stones I work with most are traditionally known for.
Why use crystals?
I like to explain crystals in four simple ideas:
- They work as releasing agents. A crystal can be a focus for letting go of heaviness, stress or old patterns.
- They work as energy amplifiers. They help hold and strengthen an intention you have set.
- They work alongside us. A crystal doesn't do the work for you. It supports the work you are already doing.
- They are made of the same five elements we are. Earth, water, fire, air and space: crystals form over long periods through these same forces, which is part of why they feel so grounding to hold.
In a healing journey, a crystal becomes a reminder you can see and touch. When you hold it, you return to your intention. That is a big part of how they help.
How to choose a crystal
The simplest way is to let yourself be drawn. Look at two or three stones, take a breath, and notice which one your eye or hand goes to first. The crystal that calls you isn't random: your subconscious often notices what your conscious mind ignores.
Amethyst or tiger eye?
- Amethyst (third eye and crown chakras). Known for intuition, spiritual growth, inner peace and protection from negativity. It calms the mind, supports meditation and helps balance emotions.
- Tiger eye (solar plexus and root chakras). Known for confidence, courage and willpower, with a grounding quality. It brings focus, protection and motivation, and supports manifesting abundance.
Black tourmaline, selenite or amethyst?
- Black tourmaline (root chakra, Muladhara). If you chose this one, your soul may be asking you to stop carrying emotional weight that was never yours. Not every battle deserves your energy, and you don't need to absorb everyone's emotions to prove your love. Work on saying "no" without guilt, releasing survival mode, and grounding yourself before big decisions. Affirmation: "I release what isn't mine. I am safe, protected and deeply grounded."
- Selenite (crown chakra, Sahasrara). A call to slow down and reconnect with your inner wisdom. Clarity comes through stillness, not overthinking. Work on daily silence or meditation and trusting your intuition instead of seeking constant validation. Affirmation: "I trust my inner guidance. Divine wisdom flows effortlessly through me."
- Amethyst (third eye and crown, Ajna and Sahasrara). A call towards spiritual expansion and emotional healing. You may already know your next step and simply be doubting yourself. Work on trusting your intuitive nudges, letting go of perfectionism and protecting your energy. Affirmation: "I trust my intuition."
Moonstone angel or jade angel?
- Moonstone often appears when you are standing between emotional exhaustion and emotional awakening: calm on the outside, overthinking on the inside. The invitation is not to fix everything but to reconnect with yourself, rest, and stop abandoning your own needs to keep the peace. Moonstone is linked with emotional boundaries, self-trust and feminine strength, and with gently healing the mother wound.
- Jade speaks of grounding and rebuilding. It suits a time when you crave stability, emotionally, financially or mentally, and want peace over drama and consistency over excitement. The work is to stop suppressing emotions in the name of being "strong", and to stop silently carrying every responsibility.
Labradorite: the stone of transformation
Labradorite is known as a stone of transformation, protection and intuition. It is said to strengthen the aura, seal energy leaks and deflect emotional drain, which is why many empaths, healers and counsellors like it. It is linked to the third eye and crown chakras and is often used during career shifts, spiritual growth and big life transitions.
Numerology fit. I find it suits life path or core numbers 2, 4, 7 and 11 best, and 6 moderately with grounding support. For 1 and 8 it can feel heavy, and for 3 and 5 it can overstimulate the mind, so use it with guidance. You can find your number in my post on life path number calculation.
Good pairings (don't overmix):
- Protection and grounding: with black tourmaline or hematite.
- Intuition and clarity: with amethyst or sodalite.
- Emotional balance: with moonstone or rose quartz.
- Manifestation: with clear quartz, which amplifies.
How to wear it. A bracelet or pendant works best, preferably in silver. Wear it on the left hand for healing, protection and intuition, and on the right when you are teaching, counselling or guiding others. Don't wear it all day, every day; take breaks, and cleanse it weekly with smoke, sound or moonlight.
Selenite: the cleanser
Selenite is known for powerful cleansing and purifying. It carries a high vibration and is often used to clear stagnant energy from a room, to align mind, body and spirit, and to cleanse other crystals: simply rest them on a selenite plate overnight. It is linked to the crown chakra, intuition, connection to the higher realm and a deep sense of peace. One practical note: selenite is soft and dissolves in water, so never cleanse it with water.
Caring for your crystals
- Cleanse regularly: smoke, sound, moonlight or a selenite plate.
- Charge with an intention. Hold the stone, breathe, and say what you would like it to support.
- Rest them, and yourself. More crystals are not always better.
What crystals are not
Crystals are a gentle support for reflection and energy work. They don't cure illness and they never replace a doctor, a therapist or medication. If you are struggling with anxiety, sleep or your health, please see a professional, and use crystals alongside that care.
