How to calculate your life path number (with examples)

20-Sep-2026

In numerology, the most important number you have is your life path number. It comes from your full date of birth and describes your core nature, natural gifts and the lessons you are here to learn.

You can calculate it yourself in a couple of minutes. Here is how.

How to calculate your life path number

Reduce the day, month and year of your birth separately to single digits, then add them together and reduce again.

Example: 14 August 1990

  1. Day: 14 → 1 + 4 = 5
  2. Month: August is the 8th month → 8
  3. Year: 1990 → 1 + 9 + 9 + 0 = 19 → 1 + 9 = 10 → 1 + 0 = 1
  4. Add them: 5 + 8 + 1 = 14 → 1 + 4 = 5

The life path number is 5.

Worked example of a numerology life path number for 14 August 1990: day 5, month 8, year 1, giving life path 5

Master numbers: 11, 22 and 33

If the final total comes to 11, 22 or 33, many numerologists don't reduce it further. These are called master numbers, and they carry a stronger, more demanding version of their base number (2, 4 and 6).

Example: 5 April 2000

  • Day: 5
  • Month: 4
  • Year: 2000 → 2 + 0 + 0 + 0 = 2
  • Add them: 5 + 4 + 2 = 11

The life path number is 11, a master number.

Your life path is only the beginning

The life path number is one piece of your numerology chart. A full reading also looks at your destiny number (from your full name), your soul urge number, and your personal year, which shows the theme of the year you are in now. Together they give a far richer picture than any single number.
