Inner child healing: feeling safe, and claiming your power back

14-Apr-2026

Many of the patterns that trouble us as adults were learnt very early. A child who had to be "good" to be loved may grow into an adult who cannot say no. A child who felt unheard may grow into someone who over-explains, or stops speaking up at all. None of this is a flaw. It is a part of you that learnt how to stay safe, and is still doing its job.

Inner child healing is the gentle work of meeting that younger part of yourself, listening to it, and showing it that things are different now.

What we mean by the inner child

The idea of the "inner child" comes from psychology and has been popular in self-help since the 1970s and 1980s. It describes the feelings, beliefs and memories from childhood that still shape how we react today. In my own work I also look at the energetic and karmic side: the patterns we inherit from our family line, and the lessons we seem to keep meeting until we learn them.

The first step is acknowledgement

Healing begins the moment you can say, honestly, "Yes, this is a pattern, and it is mine." Acknowledgement motivates right action. Right action begins to shift your energy, and from there healing starts from within.

Small things build on this: a ritual you keep, an affirmation you repeat, a page of journaling, a kind deed. None of them is dramatic on its own, but together they magnify the journey.

Feeling safe comes before fixing

Awareness starts healing, but regulation is what completes it. You can understand a pattern perfectly and still feel your body react the old way. That is because the nervous system remembers.

Healing isn't about fixing yourself. It is about teaching your body that the danger is over. One affirmation I come back to again and again is:

"I am safe to feel. I don't have to earn love anymore."

Say it slowly, with a hand on your heart or your belly, and breathe out longer than you breathe in. Notice what happens in your body, without trying to change it.

Do these patterns sound familiar?

You might recognise an inner child pattern if you keep attracting the same kind of relationship, freeze when someone raises their voice, feel guilty resting, or find that the same hurdles loop back into your life no matter how hard you try. Often these are tied to old emotional blocks and ancestral patterns as much as to anything happening now.

Karma, family and cutting old cords

No one was taught how to be an ideal parent or an ideal child. We all arrive with a few unresolved lessons, and we often meet them through our families and partners. Our parents were, and are, in their own loops too.

That understanding can soften a great deal. It becomes possible to forgive and to ask forgiveness, to cut the energetic cords that keep old pain alive, and to step into a new version of yourself. Forgiveness here does not mean pretending something was fine. It means you no longer have to carry it. If you want a simple practice for this, the four phrases of Ho'oponopono are a beautiful place to start.

Mirror work: a daily practice

Mirror work rewires your self-image. Self-image rewires confidence. And confidence changes the choices you make, which shapes the life you live.

  1. Stand in front of a mirror for one or two minutes, ideally at the same time each day.
  2. Look gently into your own left eye.
  3. Say slowly: "I trust myself. I respect myself. I am becoming unshakeable."
  4. If emotion comes up, let it. That is part of the work.

It can feel awkward at first. Most people find it gets easier within a week or two.

Claiming your power back

As old emotional blocks clear, many people describe the same thing: they feel like themselves again. Decisions get easier, boundaries feel less frightening, and energy that went into old fears becomes available for the life you actually want.

What inner child healing is not

This is gentle, reflective work. It does not replace therapy, psychiatric care or medical treatment, and if you are living with trauma, anxiety or depression, please work with a qualified professional alongside any spiritual practice. Go slowly. You never have to revisit more than you feel ready for.

If you'd like support
