Don't know your exact birth time? Here is what astrology can still tell you

11-Oct-2026

"I don't know my birth time. Can you still read my chart?"

It is one of the questions I hear most often, and the answer is yes. A missing birth time changes how we read your chart, but it doesn't make a reading pointless.

Why the birth time matters

Your birth time decides your lagna, the sign rising on the eastern horizon when you were born. The lagna changes roughly every two hours, and it sets the order of the twelve houses in your chart. The houses are what link planets to specific areas of life: career, marriage, home, health and so on.

So without a time, we can't be sure which house each planet falls in. That is the part that becomes uncertain.

What stays reliable without a time

Quite a lot, actually:

  • The signs of most planets. Apart from the Moon, the planets move slowly, so their signs are the same all day.
  • Your Moon sign, usually. The Moon changes sign about every two and a quarter days. Unless you were born on a day it changed, your Moon sign (rashi) is clear.
  • Your nakshatra, often. The Moon's lunar mansion changes about once a day, so this is usually knowable too.
  • Big transits, such as whether you are in Sade Sati, which depends on your Moon sign rather than your birth time.
What astrology can still read without a birth time: planet signs, Moon sign, nakshatra and Sade Sati, and what needs the time: lagna, houses and fine timing

This means we can still talk meaningfully about your emotional nature, broad life themes and the current phase you are in.

How to find your birth time

Before we give up on it, it is worth trying:

  1. Your birth certificate. Many Indian municipal birth certificates and hospital discharge papers record the time.
  2. The hospital. Some hospitals keep records for decades and will share them with you.
  3. Family. Parents, grandparents or an older sibling may remember. Even "just after sunrise" or "during lunch" is a useful starting point.
  4. An old horoscope. Many families had a kundli made when a child was born. It will list the time used.

Working with an approximate time

If you know roughly when you were born, for example "between 6 and 8 in the morning", I can look at the possible charts within that window and see which one fits the major events in your life. This is called birth time rectification. It takes some back-and-forth about key dates (when you started work, married, moved, lost a parent), so let me know in advance if you'd like to try it.

When another tool fits better

Sometimes the honest answer is that astrology isn't the best tool for your question without a time. In those cases I often suggest:

  • Tarot, which needs no birth details at all and works beautifully for a specific situation or decision.
  • Numerology, which only needs your date of birth and name.

You don't have to work out which is right. Tell me what is on your mind, and I'll suggest the best way in. You can send me a message or book a consultation.
