Mercury (Budh) in astrology: what it rules and how to strengthen it

08-Jul-2026

Of all the planets, Mercury is the one I see most clearly in everyday life. It shows up in how we talk, how we think, how we learn and how we handle the small business of each day. When it is working well, the mind feels clear and our words land. When it struggles, we feel scattered, restless or misunderstood.

Here is what Mercury rules, how a weak Mercury can show up, and the simple remedies I suggest for strengthening it.

Who is Budh?

In Vedic astrology Mercury is called Budh, from the same root as buddhi, intellect. It is the fastest planet in our solar system, circling the Sun in about 88 days, and that speed suits it: Mercury is quick, curious and always moving. Its day is Wednesday (Budhvaar) and its colour is green.

Budh rules two signs, Gemini (Mithun) and Virgo (Kanya), and it is linked with the youthful, learning side of us. In the chart it is often called the prince among the planets.

What Mercury rules

Mercury looks after a wide range of everyday things:

  • The mind: logic, thinking, intellect and focus.
  • Communication: speech, writing, listening and how we are understood.
  • Commerce and trade: business, buying and selling, negotiation.
  • Day-to-day life: daily schedules, routines, work habits and short journeys or commutes.
  • Your immediate world: siblings, neighbours, friends and your wider network.
  • Health and routine: especially the nervous system and the rhythm of daily habits.

Signs of a weak Mercury

A weak or troubled Mercury in the chart can show up as:

  • Poor communication, or feeling that people don't understand you.
  • Restlessness and difficulty settling.
  • Low focus and a scattered mind.
  • Impulsive decisions, or the opposite, being unable to decide at all.

Of course, these can have many causes. A proper reading of your kundli looks at Mercury's sign, house and strength before drawing any conclusion.

The Budh mantra and simple practices

The Budh beej mantra is:

Om Braam Breem Broum Sah Budhaya Namah

You can chant it 108 times on Wednesdays, ideally in the morning, using a mala to count. Alongside the mantra:

  • Walk barefoot on grass, which is grounding and links you with the green of Mercury.
  • Wear green on Wednesdays.
  • Practise breathing techniques for a calmer mind and better focus: simple deep breathing, kapalbhati and nadi shodhan (alternate nostril breathing).

A note on breathing: kapalbhati is a forceful practice. If you are pregnant, have high blood pressure, heart or lung conditions, or have had recent surgery, please skip it and check with your doctor. Gentle deep breathing and nadi shodhan are kinder places to start.

Lal Kitab remedies for Mercury

Lal Kitab remedies are simple, practical actions rather than expensive rituals. I have written more about how they work in my post on Lal Kitab remedies. For Mercury, the traditional suggestions include:

  1. Avoid non-vegetarian food and alcohol, especially on Wednesdays.
  2. Donate green clothes or bangles to young girls on Wednesdays, and support their education where you can.
  3. Feed green fodder to cows.
  4. Plant Tulsi at home and care for it. (Lal Kitab also mentions parrots; I prefer the Tulsi, so no bird has to be caged.)
  5. Apply a turmeric tilak on the forehead.
  6. Stay away from false promises and lying.

That last one matters most. When Mercury is strong, the mind is clear and words carry weight. Honesty keeps it that way.

Everyday dos and don'ts

Mercury responds well to small, steady lifestyle changes.

Do:

  1. Wear green on Wednesdays.
  2. Grow plants and nurture them.
  3. Help people with disabilities and the transgender (kinnar) community, with respect and without fuss.
  4. Eat green lentils such as moong, and leafy vegetables.
  5. Keep a gratitude journal, or simply write your thoughts down each day.
  6. Wear green crystals such as green aventurine or peridot, if you like working with crystals.
  7. Keep your toilets and bathrooms clean.

Don't:

  1. Gossip.
  2. Let the mind run wild: practise mental discipline and limit screen time.
  3. Lie or manipulate.
  4. Procrastinate. Take action and build consistency.

Affirmations to repeat each morning:

  • "My words are clear."
  • "People value what I say."

What these remedies are not

Remedies support you; they don't replace your own effort or professional advice. If you are dealing with focus or memory difficulties, anxiety, a business decision or a legal matter, please see a doctor, counsellor or the right professional as well. Nothing here is a guarantee of a particular result.

If you'd like to look at your own Mercury

Every chart is different, and the right remedy depends on where Budh sits in yours. If you would like simple, personal remedies, you can book a Lal Kitab consultation, or send me a message with your question.
